Ghosting and situationships: what to do

What is ghosting, and what is a situationship? Why people ghost, what to do when it happens — and how to get out of a situationship.

Published 5 November 2026

Ghosting is when someone stops replying without saying why. A situationship is a relationship that isn't a relationship — you see each other, you text, but nobody has said what it is. The two are more connected than you'd think: a situationship often ends in ghosting, because there was never an agreement to break. Here's what the terms mean, why it happens, how to respond — and how to avoid ending up there again.

What is ghosting?

Ghosting means that someone you've been texting or dating suddenly disappears. Messages go unanswered, calls go unreturned, and no explanation comes. The word comes from ghost — the person vanishes like one.

Ghosting can happen at any stage: after three messages on an app, after a first date, or after several months together. The longer you've known each other, the more it hurts — and the less fair it is.

Ghosting and the other terms

Why do people ghost?

The short answer: because it's easier for them. The long answer has a few patterns that keep coming up.

Avoiding conflict. The most common one. The person knows it's not going anywhere but finds it uncomfortable to say so. Silence feels easier than rejection — for them.

Too many conversations at once. On dating apps, plenty of people are texting five to ten people at the same time. When one conversation turns into something, the others slip away without a decision.

They didn't know what they wanted. If the other person was never sure, there's no clear ending either — so they just disappear when the interest fades.

Something in their life changed. An ex, a new job, a crisis. It explains it, but it doesn't excuse it.

What they all have in common: it says more about the person ghosting than about you. Ghosting is a way of avoiding a conversation — not a verdict on what you're worth.

What to do when you get ghosted

  1. Send one message — not more. If you need closure, write something calm and short: "I haven't heard from you in a while, so I'm guessing you don't want to keep this going. That's completely fine — good luck." It closes the door with dignity, and you don't have to wait for a reply.

  2. Don't overanalyze. You won't find the answer in the last message you sent. It probably wasn't there.

  3. Remove them if it helps. You don't need to keep up with their stories. Archive the conversation or delete the match.

  4. Treat it as information. Someone who ghosts after two dates would have been hard to be in a relationship with, too. You got the answer early.

If they show up again (zombieing): You don't owe anyone a reply. If you want to give it a chance, ask for an explanation first. If none comes, you have your answer.

What is a situationship?

A situationship is a connection with many of the hallmarks of a relationship — you see each other regularly, you text every day, maybe you sleep together — but neither of you has defined what it is. There's no agreement to see only each other, no shared plans, and often an unspoken fear of asking.

The word is a blend of situation and relationship, and it describes something that has always existed but that dating apps have made far more common: when there's always a new option one swipe away, it's tempting not to commit.

Signs you're in a situationship

Is a situationship always bad?

No. If you both want the same thing — something light with no commitment — and you've said it out loud, it's a perfectly fine arrangement. The problem starts when one of you wants more and doesn't say so, or when neither of you knows what the other wants. Then a situationship isn't a relationship, it's a waiting room.

How to get out of a situationship

Have the conversation. It's the only way. It doesn't have to be dramatic: "I really like spending time with you, and I've reached the point where I'd like to know what this is for you. I'm looking for something more."

Be ready for the answer. If the answer is "I don't know," that's an answer too. People who want to be with you usually know.

Set a limit for yourself. If you're staying because you hope it'll change, give yourself a time frame. Three months without movement is rarely the start of something.

And if you're the one who's unsure: say so. "I don't know what I want yet" is a fair message. Leaving the other person to guess isn't.

Rejection: how to say no without ghosting

The best antidote to ghosting is more of us saying no properly. It takes ten seconds:

And when you're the one getting turned down: reply "thanks, you too" and move on. A clear no is a gift compared to silence.

How to avoid ghosting and situationships going forward

Say early what you're looking for. Not as a demand on the first date, but in your profile and in the first conversations. It filters out the wrong people before there's anything to lose.

Meet soon. Long written conversations build expectations of a person you don't know. The sooner you meet, the sooner you know whether there's something there. See when to suggest meeting up.

Watch actions, not words. Do they make plans, keep them, and follow up? That tells you more than sweet messages.

Pick a place where the purpose is said out loud. Apps where people state clearly what they're looking for, and where you can see whether profiles are verified, don't make it impossible to get ghosted, but they make it easier to find someone who wants the same thing as you. Ghosting and situationship FAQ

What does ghosting mean?

When someone cuts off all contact without explanation — stops answering messages and calls, usually after you've been texting or dating for a while.

What does situationship mean?

A relationship without a defined status: in many ways you act like a couple, but you've never agreed on what you are or whether you're seeing only each other.

Why does it hurt so much to be ghosted?

Because there's no ending. Your brain tries to fill the gap with explanations, and most of them are about you. The uncertainty is often worse than the rejection itself.

Should I text someone who ghosted me?

One short, calm message if you need closure for your own sake. Don't expect a reply, and don't send more.

How long before it counts as ghosting?

There's no fixed limit, but if someone who used to reply within a day has been silent for a week with no explanation, it's fair to assume they're gone.

How do I know if it's a situationship or a relationship?

Ask. If you haven't talked about it and you're unsure, it's by definition a situationship. A relationship is something you both know you're in.

What is zombieing?

When someone who ghosted you suddenly texts again after a long time, as if nothing happened. You don't owe them a reply.
