How do I spot a romance scammer?
Scammers build trust, then ask for money or investments. Nobody you only know online should ask you for money. Report the profile.
Updated 5 November 2026
A romance scammer builds trust over several weeks and then asks for money, gift cards or an investment. Nobody you have only met online should ever ask you for money.
Warning signs
They quickly want to move the conversation to another app.
There's always a reason not to meet or have a video call.
The conversation turns to crypto, trading or a "safe" investment.
A sudden crisis comes up that only you can help pay for.
Protect yourself
Never send money, gift cards or codes to someone you haven't met.
Do a reverse image search if the photos look too perfect, and look for the Photo verified badge.
Report the profile from the shield with the reason Spam or scam, and keep the messages.
If you have already sent money, stop all payments, contact your bank straight away and report it to the police.
